Peyton Had a Little Lamb

Peyton Had a Little Lamb, or Two, or Three

Fruits and vegetables usually get all the local love but lots of Kentucky farmers raise livestock, too.  In 2022, we’re going to explore local meat production and distribution, and how it’s integrated into our local food systems.

Patrick Kennedy of Stone Cross Farm, which supplies delicious pork and beef to our Holly Hill restaurants, says there’s nothing like being responsible for a living, breathing creature and that learning animal husbandry is a wonderful experience for future farmers.

With that in mind, we’d like to introduce you to Peyton Zinner.  Peyton is a 13-year-old eighth grader at Bondurant Middle School in Frankfort, Ky. and a Future Farmer of America.

Peyton’s family breeds, shows and sells sheep, and Peyton has been showing lambs at the Kentucky State Fair Livestock Exhibition since she was just a few years old.

The current crop of lambs started arriving the day after Christmas.  Peyton and her dad Jeff Zinner will keep about 15 or so and sell the rest.

Over the next couple of months, Peyton will care for her growing lambs and begin the process of selecting one or two to show at the State Fair.

From now until August, we’re going to tag along so we can better understand what it takes to care for livestock and participate in an exhibition; and especially, how youth are shaping the future of Kentucky agriculture.

We’ll check in with Peyton periodically and keep you posted on her (and her lambs’) progress.
