Cider Seelbach

from Leslee Macpherson

This fall themed drink is twice-removed from the classic champagne cocktail by way of the Seelbach*.  With local ciders (both alcoholic and non) it’s perfect for any autumnal get together!

Ingredients:

1 oz (2 T) bourbon

1 oz (2 T) local apple cider (such as Evans Orchard)

1 bar spoon (1 t) fresh lemon juice

Wise Bird Commonwealth Gold Cider (or hard cider of your choice)

Lemon peel for garnish

Directions:

Shake bourbon, apple cider & lemon juice with ice. Double strain into a flute (or glass of choice). Top with hard cider and garnish with a lemon twist!

Options: Add a dash of Woodford Reserve Sassafras and Sorghum Bitters for a little bit of spice!

Lemon twist note: bars use a channel knife to make a twist typically but this can also be created by peeling a piece of lemon rind with a standard peeler, cutting it into a ¼” wide strip and twisting it like a corkscrew for garnish!

*The Seelbach cocktail was purported to be a venerable house standard at the Seelbach Hotel in Louisville (itself a fixture in The Great Gatsby) until bartender Adam Segar admitted he’d made the story up, according to The New York Times.

Roasted Kabocha Squash

Some of Ouita’s favorite salads involve roasted vegetables and her all-time favorite roasted vegetable is kabocha squash. It is a very dense, delicious member of the Hubbard family with dark orange or green skin (which is edible when cooked).
